Manitoba Section Report
National Chemistry Week
As NCW usually coincides both with mid-term exams and Fall Convocation at the University of Manitoba our celebration of NCW has recently been held in the first week of October. This year the Manitoba CIC Local Section held Student Awards Night on Thursday October 3 on the campus of the University of Manitoba. About 70 people, including students, their families, and members from industry and academe, attended the event. Seven awards from the CIC Local Section were presented to undergraduate students from Brandon University and the Universities of Manitoba and Winnipeg, in recognition of the outstanding achievements in chemistry and biochemistry of students in Manitoba. In addition, each of the three Chemistry Departments gave out their own awards and scholarships to both undergraduate and graduate students.
The audience was also treated to a
fascinating presentation of the research of Dr. Harry Duckworth entitled
"An Enzyme in the Family; Growing Up Scientifically with Citrate Synthase".
Harry Duckworth, Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry at the
University of Manitoba, was named the 2002 Manitoba Outstanding Chemist that
evening. The event ended with a mixer.
During National Chemistry Week, the Department of Chemistry at the University of
Manitoba set up an exhibit in the lobby of the Chemistry building to display NCW
Posters and to distribute CIC Careers Pamphlets, Pocket Periodic Tables, and NCW
Brochures. Undergraduates always show great interest in the display and hundreds
of Careers Pamphlets were distributed. A draw for was held for CIC
paraphernalia, including T-shirts.
