Vancouver CIC Local Section

National Chemistry Week 2003

The Vancouver CIC Local Section was again very pleased to participate in the celebration of NCW/SNC in 2003.  This was the ninth year we participated regionally in the crystal growing competition.  We had a very good response, with five schools submitting crystals for display and judging at Science World on Saturday, October 25, 2003.  All of the crystals submitted, large and small, were of good quality.

Three free passes to Science World were given to each school submitting crystals for the competition, courtesy of the Vancouver Local Section.  The three judges were Dr. You Guang Ye, Dr. Gerry Reimer, MCIC, and Dr. Ken MacFarlane, MCIC.

After a very careful and detailed examination and consideration of each of the many crystals submitted the following results were obtained:

This was the first time that First Place in both categories went to the same school.  All students listed above received Crystal Growing Champion T-shirts and other promotional material.  Congratulations to these students and all who took part in the competition.  Congratulations also to their teachers, Ms. Leslie Johnston of Point Grey Secondary School, Ms. Kierstan McCaw of Southridge School and Mr. Andrew Tovey of Steveston Secondary School.

There were two chemistry sows entitled “The Two Profs’ Most Excellent Chemistry Adventures” in the Science World Demonstration Theatre given by Vance Williams, MCIC, and Jason Clyburne, MCIC, of Simon Fraser University.  The show was enjoyed by a large audience of students and their families.  The show had many features to delight and overawe the youngsters.  The “Profs” gave a lively and enthusiastic, well paced performance of their skills with well chosen experiments.

Crofton House School students participated in the crystal competition but also held a NCW Poster Competition.  Their theme was based on the periodic table and the use of the elements in everyday products.  The project was conducted by Ms. Pamela E. Slater of the Art Department with her grade eight students.  The judges were Dr. Daniel Leznoff, MCIC, Dr. Adrian Wade, MCIC, and Dr. Graham Darling, MCIC.

As always my warmest thanks and appreciation to the many people who contributed their time, support, and efforts to make NCW 2003 a success.  My very special thanks to our National Programme Manager, Ms. Gale Thirlwall-Wilbee and Dr. Chris Young, MCIC, National Coordinator, Crystal Growing Competition for their help in making the week of events in Vancouver a success.  All materials were very greatly appreciated.
