Ivan Kassal’s Chemistry Site is an impressive website created by high school student Ivan Kassal of Mississauga, Ontario. This website contains some excellent chemistry experiments that you can try at home with inexpensive materials available from the grocery store or pharmacy. Ivan’s homepage also has links to several other very good chemistry sites and eight popular search engines. You can find Ivan’s homepage at http://www.pathcom.com/~m_kassal/homepage.html
Congratulations to Emily Chung, an undergraduate chemistry and genetics student at the University of Western Ontario, for receiving second prize in the Chemistry and Industry magazine’s essay writing competition. Emily won the international science writing award last year for writing about the use of scanning probe microscopy in a way that non-scientists can understand and enjoy. Her very readable essay entitled "Probing into Your Future" can be found at:

In July of 1997 McGill University in Montreal hosted the biggest ever International Chemistry Olympiad where last year’s Team Canada was triumphant with a winner in each of the award categories. The Canadian winners were Simon Blais (Gold Medal); Audrey Lovett (Silver Medal); Scott Crawford (Bronze Medal); Isabelle Deshaies (Certificate of Merit). The Chemistry Olympiad provides students with an aptitude for chemistry the chance to travel and meet students from all over the world with similar interests. For more information concerning the Olympiad access the Olympiad webpage at

Kudos to Ashish Khisti of Woburn Collegiate Institute in Scarborough, Ontario. Ashish is a two-time winner (1997 and 1998) of the National High School Chemistry Examination! The exam is sponsored by the Chemical Institute of Canada and is intended to promote interest in chemistry and gives Canadian high school students with a knack for chemistry the opportunity to compete for cash prizes. More information about the Exam can be obtained from the CIC National High School Exam webpage at:
